What can you as an individual do to reduce your personal impact upon the wider environment, and more specifically reduce your carbon footprint? Here are a few examples across a range of different aspects of your life:

 

Home

  • Maintain and operate your appliances correctly
  • Upgrade your boiler to latest A efficiency level
  • Adjust your cylinder thermostat to no higher than 60°C/140°.
  • Purchase energy efficient appliances
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs
  • Insulate your loft
  • Invest in cavity wall insulation
  • Insulate hot water tanks and pipes
  • Install double glazing
  • Draft proof windows and doors
  • Switch to a ‘Green Power’ supplier

 

Transport

  • Walk, cycle, use car sharing or use public transport
  • Work from home - use tele-working (Internet etc)
  • Ease off the accelerator or drive a fuel efficient vehicle
  • Reduce your air travel

 

Paper and material

  • Reduce paper - use digital storage
  • Buy recycled products
  • Use paper both sides - opt for double sided printing and copying.
  • Cut down waste and scrap - recycle.
  • Recycle ink, toners etc.
  • Use 'greener' cleaning materials.

 

Food

  • Save packaging by buying fresh
  • Eat less meat, consume more plant based products
  • Save transport emissions by eating local produce
